In flashbacks one discovers that Orlov had trained Salt and several other children in Russia to plan for a day X when these children would have grown up and would attack America from various vantage points and later take over its nuclear property. As a part of this huge disastrous game plan he tells her, she has to kill the visiting Russian President and she goes ahead and does it. It is later found that he actually has not really died. She goes along with him for some time and sees her husband Mike, an Archeologist dying in front of her to prove her loyalty to Orlov but later turns herself in to the American Police and just plays along with Orlov to know his plans. He is a NATO mole who takes her to the Whitehouse and starts shooting at the guards and she somehow manages to save the President and prevent a nuclear attack on Teheran and Mecca which is launched by Winter. The President has been misled to believe that Russia is preparing a nuclear attack on America, all because of these defectors and moles.
